Foreign Buyers Opening Whistler Bank Accounts

It would appear that Bank rules for opening accounts has changed. No longer will the banks accept notarized documents for identification to open an  account. The individual must have and eye ball to eye ball meeting with a banker.  And they will not accept a Power of attorney either.

This has implications for any offshore person getting a mortgage as they would have to return to Canada to be able to administer the loan and be approved.

If you're a non-Canadian buyer of Whistler real estate, I suggest you go through the process of providing ID etc in person to a bank while you're here if you think there may be some future need to open an account. You wont need to open the account just get vetted in advance.  Then you can open the account when it is needed.  This will assist with the financing process.
